"But Afi," young Stigr cried. "How will I know these seven? What if they're here NOW?" Stigr was, after all, only seven, and prone to dramatic outbursts. "Hush Stiggy" Hafdan chided him half-bemusedly. "They won't arrive until you and I have long since passed into Valhalla. After all, volleyball hasn't even been invented yet." That was true, Stigr realized. He didn't even know what a smashed spike was. "But that doesn't mean it will be all sunshine and unicorns and pillaging for them," Hafdan continued. "Even in their own time, they will need to prove their worthiness and pass a series of trials before they realize true domination." Haldan looked around conspiratorially and beckoned the boy closer with a crooked bony finger. "Extraordinary, marvelous, fiendishly dangerous trials" his voice barely a whisper. "But first, go and grab another log for the fire. It is unwise to tell of such unkindness without a little light to keep the the trickster spirits at bay."
